Justin Toben

Justin Toben

Justin grew up in the small town of Donnellson, Iowa. Didn’t take long for Justin’s nick name to stick, due to his last name and soon became known as “Toby”. Justin began exploring the outdoors on the small farm where he grew up. He hunted squirrels and rabbits at a young age with his dad. At the age of twelve he has his first experience to hunt pheasant with the assistance of dogs. He found the work of the dogs as a team to be fascinating, but little did Toby know, that this would soon become one of his passions. While still in school, Justin moved to Fairfield, Iowa with his mom and step dad. His step Step dad taught him more about handling and training bird dogs. Through his high school years he spent much of his free time working the dogs, training and hunting game birds around the Fairfield, Iowa area. During this time he also got the pleasure of hunting with his step-father’s dad Jim, who coon hunted with hounds. It has now become apparent to Toby, that hunting with highly skilled and trained dogs real interesting and he wanted to learn even more. A few years after graduating high school he purchased my first home in rural Jefferson County Iowa where he met his new neighbor who raised dogs to hunt hunt raccoons. Noticing he had hounds he started to coon hunt and became friends with his new hunting partners. His neighbor helped Toby find his first coon hound pup and taught Toby the ropes of training dogs. Quickly hooked with both his interest and passion for chasing game with dogs, Toby found himself buying, raising, training and trading hound dogs. After his first coyote hound Toby was hooked and addicted to chasing coyotes in the wild with hounds. In the last ten years of coyote hunting Toby has gotten the pleasure to meet many other hounds men from all over Iowa. Building many friendships from buying and trading dogs keeps his interest going for the chase of Coyotes. The teamwork between man and dog is fascinating and along with the camaraderie of hunting as a group, and the teamwork with other hunters, is a true passion. With each hunt completed, Toby shares how the dogs performed amongst the group and leave with a story to pass to the next generation and will be shared for a lifetime. Toby looks forward to each day, when the tailgate of his truck drops, and watches his dogs leap from the gate as they go in pursuit.
